As is the case with most of my personal work, this album is made through a process of connectivity, of various ideas interacting with each other and unveiling a bigger story, a bigger canvas.
"The most personal is the most creative"
Surely, a personal album since presents the story of my late great grandfather, Thodoris Myzikos. His storytelling, his voice as the basic part of the soundscape. With this album, Refusee, I present what is most probably the final chapter of a “psychomagic act” concerning the genealogical tree from my mother.
The last three years, I dived in the family concepts as main part of my own healing. Alejandro Jodorowsky’s approach (geneogram, tarot, psychomagia) was the main influence in this therapeutic process. Lucky enough, among the family archives there was a VHS tape with the interview of my great grandfather. An hour of brilliant storytelling; his origin, his experience of Minor Asia war and catastrophe, his refuge to Greece and the life thereafter.
My first attempt of this “act” was a mixtape for Random Access Radio more than three years ago. Then (same year) a live audio-video installation in collaboration with the video artist Glitch_A at the traditional coffee shop in Preveza, “Markos”. Some years later the mixtape for Paranoise Radio under the same title with this album.
"See"
The title reflects to an attempt to understand, to “see”, the refugee crisis in Europe and worldwide, even by focusing to one person of my family that he was refugee too during Minor Asia war and catastrophe. Different era and conditions, though, but still some elements are so similar.
In his storytelling, grandfather admitted that he would prefer to change religion and remain in Turkey. In his own words: “I will always be Turkish Christian Orthodox”. He repeated two times in the interview that he regretted coming to Greece. The impact of these words of his were really disturbing for me when I first heard them. So difficult for me to comprehend. By working on the interview, trying to understand more of what this actually means, I felt that this regret was a kind of trauma for the family, something that may be transmitted from one generation to the other in different ways. I felt that was a great chance to dig deeper in my own emotions and find love and acceptance, find the real meaning of this dedication album.
One of the latest decisions was to exclude the storytelling concerning the experiences in Greece and focus mostly on his early years before leaving from "Constantinople". The storytelling closes with the voyage by ship to Greece and in the end is the Turkish song he sings, echoed in the infinity, communicating with the past and the future, dedicated to all the generations before him and after, like a ceremony of freedom, of healing, of love.
"Chants"
One other main creative decision was to include Turkish chants. Except one that is actually Arabic and kept mainly for its dramatic tone, the remaining are from one specific imam. This archive comes from a friend, a Turkish Captain that he was playing through the ship’s speakers for his crew on a daily basis, choosing them for a specific time of the day.
As far as I am concerned, religion is like dogma, a negative aspect to say the least. But for grandfather was sacred and I decided to approach his own philosophy if I may say so with this element within the soundscapes, the soundtrack I created.
"Dedication"
I dedicate this album also to his grandson and uncle of mine, Thodoris Myzikos who is currently fighting severe illness and to the next one who will carry part of this story not as a burden, but as material for continuing and enriching the life cycle.
